NDP releases Workers for Canada plan

OTTAWA — In the face of Donald Trump’s economic attacks on Canada, Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s NDP, consulted labour leaders, progressive economists and expert advisors, and released his plan for a stronger, fairer and more resilient Canadian economy. His plan includes rescuing at-risk home-building projects, building an East-West energy grid and fixing EI to cover more workers, faster.

“Let’s fight back. Let’s resist. Let’s build, build, build,” said Singh. “Not just for the next four years, but to build a workers-first, Canada-first, resilient economy for the long-term. We can forge, buy and construct more of what we need right here. We can create good, unionized jobs. And Canada can have workers’ backs so much better than we do today.

“Appeasement won’t work. Cozying up to Donald Trump and Elon Musk won’t work. Making Canada look more like America won’t work. Donald Trump wants to take over our country. He wants to destroy our economy and take our jobs. Only resistance will work. Standing up to the bully will work, and we can win this fight by building a Canada that works for workers.”

Singh warned that the powerful big-business lobby is already using the trade war as an excuse to push an agenda of tax cuts for the rich and job cuts in the public sector, as well as reduced worker protections.

“Mark Carney wants to give billions to big corporations with no strings attached—and that’s a big red flag for me, and for progressive people,” said Singh. “Of course, Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives want Canada to be America in everything but name. Poilievre won’t risk losing Elon Musk’s backing, so he won’t fight back, and I think that’s the wrong priority.”
